The sumptuously made film, glorious visually, begins well enough, establishing the early part of the story with great style and energy.
A lot more unrestrainement all round might have made the film a more audacious and ultimately more satisfying film, which would give audiences something to talk about.

I doubt Coppola will ever put together a more beautiful and perfect 90 seconds of film.....You can say this much for certain about Sophia Coppola's odd, enthralling, tedious, and frivolously sumptuous Marie Antoinette :....Again, it recalls the early promise of the film....For all its faults, Marie Antoinette is a beautifully constructed film....It's a great scene though.... ... We tend to think of Marie Antoinette as the spoiled rich bitch who too busy swimming in diamonds to care that her people were starving.
Kirsten Dunst, on the one hand, is perfect casting for the part of Marie Antoinette.

Girl silliness aside, Marie Antoinette has a great story arch.
In Marie Antoinette her condescending, world weary face is put to perfect use, and she reminds the modern world that if you can at least look that powerful though contributing little, then maybe that's enough to make it work.
