The scenes involving Jack's stroke-ridden father (Howard Hesseman) and the oversized fish tank are among the film's funniest as well as the most poignant.
Occasionally played for laughs, but grounded in the mire of life's harsh reality, Man About Town has its moments, but is less than a memorable ride uptown.

Man About Town is simply too flat for its own good.....To be fair, less impressive films have found distributors....It's certainly not the worst film of the year....It's not a total loss, but most viewers have seen similar plotlines in much more impressive films already.....Additionally, the story's one-sided approach---told from Jack's perspective, often making use of melancholy voice-over narration---will certainly rub some viewers the wrong way..... ... When all is said and done, it's impossible to nail Affleck to the wall for this film's lack of competence.....s, but not the interesting ones that could lead to a passable motion picture.....that age-old character of moral corruption and hopelessness that turns up every month in lazy scripts.....Because nothing says 1976 quite like an iconic song from 1981..... ...
