I remember seeing this movie many years ago and it made me very aware of the AIDS epidemic. It also gave me an understanding that there is more emotion amongst gays than I had thought. A really good movie, and... Full review

This film is a brilliant look at a group of people who band together to get through the crisis of AIDS in the 1980's. I was touched with the drama shown as members of the group die, the riveting emotion... Full review

Watching "Longtime Companion" for the umpteenth time. It still makes me weep. To watch the well knit group of friends at the genesis of AIDS is heartbreaking. Best performance is Bruce Davidson's portrayal of a man that, at first denies... Full review

I was a physician in New York City from 1989 until 1992, and saw a tremendous number of people with AIDS. I feel that this movie, although it may appear to be dated, is an excellent portrayl of events that... Full review

Following in the footsteps of AN EARLY FROST, here is yet another film with an AIDS theme to reckon with. Unlike FORST [which actually dealt with a gay couple and their parents] this deals with the gay community and several... Full review

A landmark film, not only in that it is the first film to deal with the AIDS crisis, but also in its portrayal of gay men and their friends. Sitting on the cusp between earlier depictions of gays as murderous... Full review

Surprisingly, in a film that provides consistent discourse on death, there are no over-the-top death scenes or people begging for forgiveness or any of the other usual tricks to keep an audience sobbing. My screenwriting professors at college asked me to see this movie while I was at school; they knew I was sympathetic and would be open to its emotional honesty as an example of how drama should be written. ... There also seems to be some comment about the dangers of pornography _ and of obsessions on a larger scale _ at work here, but the messages are not heavy-handed, but rather buried beneath skillful satire. The best is "Longtime Companion," which has been getting a lot of national press lately as the first mainstream theatrical film to deal with AIDS among the homosexual community. ... Full Review

Written by playwright Craig Lucas for American Playhouse productions, Longtime Companion is a lively ensemble movie -....Still, if Longtime Companion lacks the seamless three-dimensionality of a major Hollywood production, one is carried along by the pungent urgency of its writing....Longtime Companion , a courageous and deeply affecting drama about the AIDS crisis, begins on a note of happy tranquillity.....it slyly deflates stereotypes of homosexual promiscuity (without in any way denying that it went on) ...
