His Longford does have an endearing childlike sweetness, but he's not a naive fool.
And there's a glimmer of flinty toughness to him as well: He doesn't much care about public perception of his relationship with Hindley, though Lindsay Duncan, as Longford's patient wife, does typically excellent work as a spouse who has been pushed too far by her husband's idealistic activism.
