To be fair, the story, cobbled together though it is, does maintain a through-plot to keep things going and Sonnenfelds penchant for over-producing pays off with the stunning art direction and special effects.
Obviously, I thought, it was doomed to be a vehicle for Carreys brand of broad physical humor played with that lurking edge of palpable desperation.

Having effectively whittled the essence of three stories into single episodic adventure, the film is fun but ultimately unable to provide a genuinely satisfying conclusion to its antics.
The one "unfortunate event" that doesn't really belong is the film's failure to distill three books' worth of stories into a single, cogent narrative.

This sounds like a good family movie, one which will show children what kids have to do to curb their naturally bubbly, inquisitive, and (yes) wild behavior.

Overall, the movie was well worth the theate ticket price, and is well worth the DVD cost as well.
A well done film that falls just a bit too short.
Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events is one of the best transfers ever committed to DVD.

Some children will understand that this is intended as macabre humor but others will not, so parents should be particularly cautious about deciding whether the film is appropriate for their kids.

Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events [Special Edition]
However, by translating that same idea to the movie version, Snickets (played here by the silhouette of Jude "Im in Every Movie" Law) repeated reminders that this movie is unpleasant or that there are no happy endings becomes a pointless and sometimes annoying attempt at staying too true to its literary roots.

Though a little more subdued than I expected, the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack of Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events worked pretty well.
The movie may have worked better with a more restricted focus.

at best, though, the film is a triumph of production design....his Christmas season, families could do worse than Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events , a pleasantly episodic and surprisingly sinister account of a deranged lunatic trying to kill three orphans....translated baby-speak make for some of the film's more amusing non sequiturs.....Lemony Snicket, by way of director Brad Silberling, will work overtime to mess with our heads.....A hearty and sophisticated DVD presentation for a film that ...
