Loved it. Bit intense, but a well made movie.

Laaga Chunri main daag Cons: A movie promoting temporary ‘whoredom’ to girls in order to rope in rich & handsome grooms !It’s a fairy tale come true – like Cinderella or Rapunzel meeting their handsome Prince after a whole lot of ordeals in life ! Pros: Women residing in Mumbai (Maharashtra) must be very good, sober, chaste and decent – thus they have the biggest slum - Dharvi – and are readily living under the most unhygienic and deplorable conditions but are happy with their dignified life style. For according to this movie , a whorish woman can earn up to Rs.30,000 in two hours if she just agrees to part with her modesty !! Points to ponder : Father is an honest employee who refuses to sign false documents and thus is deprived of his pension – the sole source of income for the family. Family consists of one wife and two daughters. Mother takes over and makes both ends meet by sewing petticoats. Father, in the mean time, buys lottery tickets ..and wastes money basically – this kind of gambling was I guess alright for the otherwise honest man – this means he was a loser as a man and as a husband – for he was of no help to his wife. Elder daughter- Rani- knew stitching and embroidery(as she herself mentioned in the Bio-data) but never came forward to help her mother and even grow their small time business by doing embroidery work on blouses etc. Younger daughter , Konkona was shown as an utterly dumb girl who is blissfully unaware of the status of home front – since she is young so the family members censor all the gory details of their mundane life from her – and are even successful in doing so !! Rani decides to go to Mumbai to fetch some financial support for her family. She tries her luck in Beauty parlors – leaves it for maybe she found it below her dignity to sweep floors and do pedicure for customers, joins a departmental store but is ousted for she could not understand or speak English !Tries to become a movie assistant but one has to move ones butt real fast – so she was kicked out from there as well. At last she reaches a Call Center and happens to met a debauch married male who promises to give her the job if she agrees to sleep with him ! She rings up her mother – who was very busy running helter-skelter collecting money to attend to her hubby’s sudden heart attack. His heart was attacked upon hearing that they will have to vacate the house btw. Rani tells her mother that she wants to come back for the people here in Mumbai are very cheap – but her mother denies and says that she better not come back and ask her for money instead. She decides to sleep with the debauch dog after all. The debauch dog devours her cherry and then denies her any job but offers her Rs.10,000/- for 2 hours of quicky session !(so you see now folks? Rickshaw pullers, taxi drivers, salesmen, other unemployed men – are men who stand in scorching sun for customers and earn maybe less than Rs.200/- per day but remember they also get to see such movies and know that females make money by just spreading their legs in an AC room and draw Rs.10,000/- per 2 hours ! thus in their frustration they rape anyone they see on the streets and are branded as criminals..no one is born a criminal – they are made so by this contradictory society!!) Later with the help of a bold female, she becomes a kept of a rich Industrialist – who introduces her among his clients as Event Manager – but her job was to actually manage the libido of his clients. Thus she makes a whole lot of money and starts sending it to her parents – only her mother knew what she was doing, her father and sister were blissfully unaware of her business. Only an absolute dumb idiot will not realize this – which her father – played by Anupam Kher- probably was - for its not possible for a non-english speaking, unsmart and uncouth paan chewing girl from Banaras to earn such exorbitantly high amount of money in a matter of a couple of months ! She meets Abhishek Bachchan – another rich Industrialist – who falls for her. In the mean time Konkona comes to Mumbai as a Mgmt trainee in an advt. Company. She falls in love with a complete bloke – a rich creative Director – who is actually Abhishek’s brother. In the last scene , Abhishek proposes Rani but she tells him that she is a Prostitute. He said that he knew it from day one but it did not really matter to him. They also tie the knot !! FAQ: How come the rich Industrialist did not mind accepting a ‘whore’ as his legally wedded wife? Ans. There are mostly 2 kinds of males (irrespective of poor or rich or middle class)- one is utterly dumb and the other is utterly shrewd and clever. Dumb males can marry just anyone – they don’t realize what they are going for- any female who gives them a wee bit of importance or feeds their ego or initiates him into the world of sex..he falls at her feet and start licking it and continues doing so for the rest of his life! Shrewd ones are those who purposely accept such whorish females as their life partners so that they can lead a ‘ You are not okay, I am not okay’ life – both will happily hump outside wedlock and no one will interfere in each others’ sex life ! Thus in future when -lets say Rani becomes fat and ugly after delivering 2-3 kids, Abhi can easily and merrily hump other Event Managers or private Secretaries without Rani raising her voice – for she will always be a subservient maid to Abhi for having accepted her in the first place – in spite of her stained Chunari….. So folks – soon we’ll see many girls jumping to stain their ‘chunaris’ for after all at the end they will manage a good looking and rich husband …the reason of their birth- as taught to them through so many fairy tales and cheap silhouette romance chic lits…

LCMD - yet another run-of-the-mill

This fall is supposed to be full of good and bad surprises. All the previews of this flick promised that a treat is likely to come our way. And this is exactly what has gone against this movie. The highlights of the songs weren't too misleading, as far as its catchy tunes are concerned. The plot revolves around a family settled in Benaras. Shivshanker Sahay (Anupam Kher) is a retired man lives in an ancestral house, with two daughters, and his wife, Sabitri (Jaya Bachchan). The elder daughter Vibha (Rani) is more conscious of...more

Badki (Rani Mukherji) and Chutki (Konkona Sen Sharma) are two sisters who live in Benaras with their parents (essayed by Anupam Kher and Jaya Bachchan.) The family is in desperate need of money and the elder sister, Badki fails to bag any job, due to the lack of her educational qualifications. Out of desperation she turns to prostitution. Films with such storylines have been done numerous times before, including the Mumtaaz starrer, 'Aaina'. The plot is predictable from the word go and is a weep fest stretching to three hours. After knowing all this, is there any reason why a sane...more

So, it is a Yash Raj movie. You have learnt to forgive them for the extra tinge of orange and the sharp sounds, the mandatory songs and the unnecessary melodrama. We are talking of a movie that claims to be about the ‘journey of a woman’. I refuse to believe that it was supposed to be in the leave-your-brain-home-and-don’t-ask-too-many-questions genre. What could have been a celebration of the spirit of a woman, turns into another story of a woman finding ultimate happiness only in meeting an ideal man. It is uncanny how a salute to womanhood ends in men being the...more

And finally Abhishek says that he earlier 'loved' her and now 'respected her for what she was. Outdated, clichéd, contrived - one is short of words to describe this two and a half hour film which makes one look forward to the watch every 30 minutes in the hope that LCMD would come to an end soon. First five minutes are perky enough as the two sisters Rani and Konjana takes the viewer through 'banaras ghat's and sing praises about the happy land they stay in. One looks forward every 10 minutes to see something good happening but nothing really happens....more

Akshay Kumar’s Bhool Bhulaiya has opened huge all over India. At quite a few places the opening was better than Akshay Kumar’s last movie Heyy Babyy. , Laaga Chunari Mein Daag has opened below expectations. Bhool Bhulaiya which opened this morning was expected to open well but the bumper opening which it has turned out to be has come as a pleasant surprise after the dull period. The opening was in the 85-95% range all over with a big release on approx 650 cinemas. At many places the opening is better than Khiladi Kumar’s last superhit Heyy Babyy released just seven...more

Produced by Aditya Chopra ‘Laaga Chunari Mein Daag - Journey of a Woman’ is the second directorial venture of Pradeep Sarkar of the critically acclaimed film Parineeta (2005) fame. Sarkar saw great success with his musical love story Parineeta, an adaptation of the 1914 Bengali novella by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. After a two year long hiatus he is back with yet another unique script. Laaga Chunari Mein Daag deals with one conservative relatively poor family who live on the banks of the river Ganga in Banaras and talks mainly about the eldest girl who takes up the responsibility of protecting and...more

Bole To: The (very boring) journey of a woman! REVIEW: First things first....Konkana Sen's character, a small town girl from Benaras, is called...sigh...Chutki. Chutki??? CHUTKI??!!!! The jarring sound that you hear are my nerves grating with the stereotypes. The first 15 minutes of the film consists of various cliched shots placed one after the other, consisting of Rani's misfortunes in her hometown, her arrival in Bombay, her looking in awe at CST station etc. One wonders why the makers actually chose to shoot these - they could easily have used stock footage from various other films from the past. The film picks...more

Yash Raj Banners gave a script written by Aditya Chopra to director Pradeep Sarkar of Parineeta fame in quest of a hard hitting realistic tale. Bollywood has already explored the subject of prostitution in many films. Needless to say that much was expected out of this Pradeep Sarkar-Yash Raj-Rani Mukherjee combo. I particularly feel pity for the director who chose to make a film within a predictable frame of storytelling. The film basically reveals the struggle of a small town girl who goes on to sacrifice her soul for the well being of her family. Badki, alongwith her mother Sabitri (Jaya...more
