AM EDT T he big ape is the hero in Peter Jackson's remake of the classic 1933 film.....Despite the fact most critics panned the film, the special effects are astounding and fantastically detailed (don't be surprised if the spider cave scenes cause the kids to have nightmares).....there is much to admire about Jackson's version of the story, which, like the original, is divided into three set pieces..... ... Certainly, the film's CGI-star (whose body movements were provided by Andy Serkis, who performed similar duties for Golum in LORD OF THE RIGNS) outshines the live-action cast.....undermines the impact of many scenes....Naomi Watts is good enough in the Fay Wray role....Peter Jackson's remake of the 1933 classic is a loving homage.... ... But it's three hours packed with awesome stuff like giant monster fighting, dinosaurs chasing and eating people, huge insects attacking Adrien Brody and biting off lesser characters' heads, and then, finally, sad-eyed, lovesick Kong biting it at the end. ... Full Review

special effects made in 1933 are better than what Peter Jackson could accomplish in 2005.....The original King Kong still has the power to enthrall, entertain, shock....Naomi Watts is a better Ann Darrow than Fay Wray, the King of Kong himself will forever reign supreme in his original Hollywood incarnation.....The best, despite what those who have fallen under the inexplicable spell of Peter Jackson may believe..... ... Luckily, the movie was enjoyable enough on its own.
I was surprised at how good he was, since I only knew him as a guy who stood in for CGI characters (Gollum in LOTR, Kong in King Kong).
and none of the effects look fake
