Das Boot, it's not; but it's a very good story of the tragic events of the K-19 submarine back in the early 60's. Granted, Harrison Ford doesn't have the best Russian accent, but his acting makes up for it. Just when... Full review

This was a pretty solid supposed true story of a Russian submarine and its captains during the early 1960s. It's memorable, story-wise, for the radiation victims among the crew members. There are some really dramatic scenes involving that horrific event.... Full review

Director Kathryn Bigelow steers this grim story by balancing torturous calamity with heartening universal traits, such as bravery.
Assigned at the last minute by impatient Communist Party leaders, he whips the ship forward and is resented by a crew loyal to its first leader, Captain Polenin (Liam Neeson).

At this point, K-19 shows signs of being a thoughtful, intelligent film that takes the fascinating enclosed world of a nuclear submarine as a place to explore conflicts of leadership and idealism, much like the excellent Crimson Tide .
Unfortunately, K-19 begins a slow dive beginning in the second hour of the film, and turns into a generic disaster film, chock-full of predictable "heroism.

is a vastly enjoyable commentary track by director Kathryn Bigelow and cinematographer Jeff Croneweth.....The director extols the tireless perseverance of the ship's workers, expertly weighing and juggling parallel tug-of-wars (Polenin vs. Vostrikov, inevitable death or American surrender)..... ... Although it is a fictionalised action movie focusing on the confrontation between two top stars, Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson, and the heroism of the other crew members, K-19: The Widowmaker is based on an actual incident that happened in July 1961, at the height of the Cold War and in the build-up to the Cuban missile crisis. ... The film works well as a drama of the struggle between the two captains, the paranoia of the cold war, and as a heroic struggle to save the boat, and maybe the rest of the world along with it.
The plot of the film is strong enough that it doesn't need great performances to keep it afloat.
