Review from ./hoopla.nu
Just Friends is a mish mash of slapstick moments strung together by a rather tenuous romcom narrative, with a little bit of 'fat humour' thrown in. Ryan Reynolds and Anna Faris appear in the same film again (see Waiting...), but it seems that there was no director present this time to, um... direct. Reynolds is all over the place, and in every scene trying to upstage his costars, and the usually brilliant Faris is similarly in need of reigning in, with her typically hilarious performance going just that little bit too far. Amy Smart (Starsky & Hutch) is thankfully more restrained,...more

A Good Holiday Romantic Comedy with likable characters and a decent amount of laughs.
A Good Holiday Romantic Comedy with likable characters and a decent amount of laughs.
"Just Friends" is about a guy named Chris (Ryan Reynolds) who in high school was an overweight but caring, sweet, and likable guy. Chris wanted to date his best friend Jamie (Amy Smart) but they never did because she wanted to just be friends and date the cool guys. Ten years later, Chris sheds all his weight and is now a big time record producer touring with the hottest pop star Samantha James (Anna Faris). While on their plane to Paris, Chris and Samantha's...more

tubby Chris (Ryan Reynolds) was rejected by his high-school best friend/crush Jamie (Amy Smart), the dork-turned-music producer winds up an unwilling visitor to his New Jersey hometown for the holidays. Friends who havent seen him in a decade are stunned by his shed weight and chiseled abs. All that matters is Jamie, though, who Chris quickly finds himself trying to win again, uncertain if he still loves her or if hes only looking to avenge his broken heart. See, Chris is an emotionally damaged, identity-challenged by-product of pop cultures obsession with the idea that happiness is being cool and owning...more

There were times during Just Friends where I was laughing so hard, tears were rolling down my cheeks. Then there were other moments where I wished that I were dead. A wildly uneven comedy, Friends benefits from the game cast and their sharp delivery. The rest of the picture is too obnoxious and obvious to be enjoyable, and the antic spirit of the film wears down the viewer quickly. 10 years ago, overweight teen Chris (Ryan Reynolds) was in love with his best friend, Jamie (sweetly played by Amy Smart). Looking to profess his love to her, Chris was instead rebuffed,...more

Just Friends inspires just enough laughs to make it tolerable, like one of those cheesy, gross-out comedies you catch channel surfing in the wee hours. Borrowing liberally, if not very adeptly, from There's Something About Mary, Roger Kumble's mediocre film about a recovering loser pursuing his high school dream girl/best friend lacks, among other things, the essential sweetness of the Farrelly brothers' 1996 smash hit. The first produced screenplay by Adam "Tex" Davis (yes, that's his credit), Just Friends opens in suburban New Jersey, circa 1995. For years, obese high school pariah Chris Brander (Ryan Reynolds in a fat suit)...more
