Jodhaa Akbar did not quite live up to my expectations. There were grand sets, glittering jewelries and dazzling costumes, representing the Mughal and the Rajput royalty in an elegant way. It was a warm sunny afternoon of January, 2006. I stepped into the Khar Office of Ashutosh Gowarikar. Shooting of Jodhaa Akbar in Sambhar (Faloti village) was interrupted concurrently because of sandstorms. A scene in the film sees Hrithik’s character taming an elephant. To do this, Hrithik would travel to Karjat on days he wasn’t shooting, so to spend time with the elephant feeding her bananas. Hrithik Roshan and Sonu Sood found the sword fight scenes much difficult to perfect, but this was not the case for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Even the dressing and make-up of the extras took over 4 hours. The editing is a little less than perfect with the inclusion of too many lights and glitters along with a stretched out song. A R Rahman’s music is ultimate. ‘Azeem-o-Shaan Shehenshah’ is grand.
