Into the Wild' is Easily Sean Penn's best film after good....The film only falters in flashback and parallel stories that deal with the parents where flashbacks ineffectively try to give cause to Christopher's motivations.....One of my favorite films of last year with great performances, music and cinematography, a few pundits whine....Penn was enchanted by the novel....Shot in as many locations as Christopher visited, Eric Gautier's scope cinematography is outstanding.... ... And as I said before, the look of the movie is indeed beautiful. With the weight of those biases intact I can tell you that, although I found the book moving and the film beautiful, it's still not a fully functioning story to me. ... Full Review

The movies frequently stunning compositions (shot by Penn and Eric Gautier) reveal not only Chris ruminations as he appears framed by windows on his bus, hiking through magnificent forests or kayaking a rambunctious river to Mexicobut also his inability to immerse himself in the wilderness he cherishes and respects. ...
