Though this film features some fine perfomences from Anthony Hopkins and Cuba Gooding Jr. it is ultimately a tired retread of one too many thrillers of the past. The character of Ethan Powell, as played by Hopkins, is like a lighter... Full review

Instinct has the heat of an inferno, and the powerful breeze of an avalanche. Anthony Hopkins delivers a breath taking performance as Dr. Ethan Powell, along side a cast that is somehow almost as equally built. Instinct has a masterful script,... Full review

"Instinct" is one of the most outstanding movies I have had the pleasure of seeing in along time. I realize it was a take-off of Jean Goodall and her documentary of living with the Gorrilas but this film takes you beyond... Full review

Basically what you would expect of a TNT Sunday afternoon movie. A film that shows off Anthony Hopkin's talent as an actor and has a good twist of mostly drama w/ a bit of action. It's a good moral story that... Full review

This movie was ok. It was not great. I think that they should have developed the thing with Anthony Hopkins and the apes better instead of interrogation all the time. But not bad... Full review

I thought this was a very good movie with a pretty interesting storyline. I liked how they stuck to the psychological basics and of course the addition to the cast of Cuba Gooding Jr. and Anthony Hopkins helps.... Full review

But that aside, Instinct is a highly enjoyable film. And like that memorable film, Instinct's central character Ethan Powell (Hopkins is superb exhibiting his command and range) has the ability not only to change the people around him, but to influence the way they perceive themselves and their lives. ... Anthony Hopkins was outstanding (no surprise there), and Cuba Gooding Jr.....He had escaped the pretense.....Instinct was marketed (and cleverly so) as an action-packed psychotic thriller complete with Hannibal the Cannibal and all his witty remarks.....Anthony Hopkins was truly the perfect person for this role..... ... In the case of ''Instinct,'' the medium is more palatable than the saccharine message because Mr. Hopkins and Mr. Gooding know how to put on a show. INSTINCT Directed by Jon Turteltaub; written by Gerald DiPego, suggested by the novel ''Ishmael,'' by Daniel Quinn; director of photography, Philippe Rousselot; edited by Richard Francis-Bruce; music by Danny Elfman; production designer, Garreth Stover; special character effects by Stan Winston; produced by Michael Taylor and Barbara Boyle; released by Touchst ... OF THE many troublesome displays of inanity that go on in "Instinct," the most flagrant has to be the fact Cuba Gooding Jr. The gratuitous sex side plot has stunk up many a bad thriller, but first, "Instinct" is not a thriller, it's a melodrama with an excellent poster; second, were it a bad thriller, it wouldn't have the good sense to be a trite one and shove Tierney and Gooding into bed or onto the kitchen floor. ... He keeps attention focused through this thriller's frequent lurches and changes of direction and is the best reason for seeing ``Instinct. For all of the movie's waywardness, director Jon Turteltaub is good at building up a mood of anxiety in a cramped hallway, a crescendo of little moments. ... Full Review
