Dern, present in almost every scene, gives a remarkable performance in roles that seem to blend into one another.
The extras on this two-disc set include Lynch interviews that are somewhat repetitious, although they come from different places.

Seemingly fascinated by the notion of a Polish gypsy folk story that refers to a curse (the number 47), Inland Empire scatters all your attempts at understanding and tramples on conventions of accessible cinema with remarkable bravura.
The film plays like a series of dreams - complete with the disconcerting half truths and semi-realities that dreams have, and with the same frustrating characteristic of being elusive and evocative all at once.

No one can make the mundane creepy the way David Lynch can.
The first hour is classic Lynch and, despite the requisite sense of foreboding, there is something comforting about the familiar devices: the spare dialogue and long pauses, the discordant music and shadowy sets.

The film is quite humourless and, by the end, pretentious.
They live in a mansion with various servants but Nikki is distressed when a strange older woman (Grace Zabriskie) arrives at her house making weird prophesies.

If you watch it with the idea that there is a linear story that makes sense buried somewhere behind rabbits and polish slave traders and a cursed remake, you will never ever get this film, and it is a properly brilliant film.
It's a beautiful poem and song and a wonderful film, a career high for both Lynch and Dern.

You can walk backwards and forwards through its enigmatic, super-spooky nocturnal corridors at regular, slow or fast speeds.
Much as I loved this movie onscreen, it seems even more comfortably crazy on DVD.
