boldly takes on an intensely treasured 3-D cinema classic, "House of Wax.....since Serra loves his close-ups like a kid loves candy, the two bungle some crucial moments of tension unnecessarily.....maintains a nice mystery found in the abandoned town location.....The track record for Dark Castle Entertainment is not impressive.....Serra is wise to keep Hilton away for most of the movie.... ... House of Wax, 2005-style, is one of those lazy horror movies relying on people making the worst possible decision at any given moment to advance plot and generate suspense.
The plodding and predictable first two-thirds has nothing we haven't seen too many times already, though this House of Wax climaxes in truly impressive style as things hot up and the house melts down.

She's clearly a young talented actress, but she keeps getting stuck in bad roles like this and the "House Of Wax" re-make.
The funny thing is these scenes were all pick up shots that the studio wanted!

The interior of the wax museum is appropriately creepy, and the climactic scene therein is well worth waiting for.

Video Presented in a 1080p, VC-1 Encoded, 1:85:1 Widescreen Aspect Ratio, House of Wax delivers a solid transfer throughout the course of the film, which was especially great considering the amount of darker sequences in the film.
The 1953 original House of Wax was nothing short of an excellent horror film.

It's not remotely as unflinchingly brutal as Hostel or Haute Tension , but after a couple waves of bloodless PG-13 horror, it's kinda nice to see a mainstream flick as bloody and depraved as House of Wax .
I'm pretty sure this is just the way the movie was shot; House of Wax looked much the same when it was making the rounds on HBO's high-definition channel a few months back, and even its less impressive moments are still a considerable step up from standard definition.

Although House of Wax fails to offer anything really horrifying in the remake
Overall, the movie is a slick "popcorn" remake of a great horror film that fails to live up to any of the elements that made the original a classic.

At least this means Collet-Serra is competent at creating visual images, which is the best thing about the film.
With the film's distinguished background and with today's CGI special effects capable of reproducing virtually anything on the screen, is it any wonder the Warner Bros.
