For those familiar with J.M. Barrie's wonderful literary creation, it's an intriguing question, and a great movie premise.
The real standout here is Dustin Hoffman, who's a surprisingly good Hook but is given woefully little to do other than snarl and rant.

Except for Hoffman's performance, the movie is so frenetic, so bursting with movement and rowdiness and special effects, so drenched in gooey, mythic sentiment about the child within, that nothing in it quite gels.
Julia Roberts, in particular, suffers from his obsession with technical bravado.

The best performance comes from Bob Hoskins, as Hook's sidekick Smee.
Now an attorney blathering endlessly into his mobile phone, he's barely aware of wife Caroline Goodall and kids Charlie Korsmo and Amber Scott.

Spielberg and Co. have finally made their Disney movie -- or better yet, their film version of a theme park at Disneyland.
It's hard to be elated about a machine, and that's what "Hook" is -- an $80 million Happy Thought machine.
