Hollywood Ending" is, like much of Allen's late work, uneven: great fun in parts, annoying in others, too familiar in some.
Treat Williams is fine as the hardass Hal and Rydell is excellent as Al.

What's sad is the movie fails on almost every level.
With "Hollywood Ending" it's fair to ask whether Woody Allen's movie career is at an end.
Allen plays Val Waxman, a once great director fallen on hard times.

Yet, as I watched Allens stuttering, nonsensical performance, and the stuttering, nonsensical film it found itself in, I actually began to enjoy myself.
Val, along with scheming agent Al (Mark Rydell), sets up an exceedingly diverse cast and crew to work on the film, but a problem has arisen just before shooting is to begin: Vals gone blind.

While Hollywood Ending isnt the worst in the Woody Allen collection, it strays far from the top of the must see pile.
Had it been a first attempt at filmmaking, you could almost admire the beginnings of a talent through some of the conventions put into place.

After a few pratfalls due to the sudden psychosomatic sightlessness, the film falls flat.
Allen has made some strong contributions as a filmmaker, but I was hoping for more from Steven Isaac ( Focus on the Family ) writes, "Allen has shown himself to be unafraid of skewering Hollywood where it needs to be skewered.
