I always felt that "His Girl Friday" mistakes sarcasm and putdowns for genuine comedy.
Yes, I am well aware that the film is considered one of the great works of screen comedy, it has been cited on numerous lists as being one of the funniest flicks of all time, it is listed on the Library of Congress's National Film Registry, etc. But, quite frankly, I never found the film to be all that wonderful.
