Just watched on DVD and loved it. Viggo was great and so was the horse named Hidalgo. At the movies this felt 30 minutes to long but at home it was just right. Beautifully shot on location, it is a feast... Full review

The plot is full of as many pitfalls as one of the old-time serials, but Mortenson and his horse (five were actually used for Hidalgo) are likable enough to shoulder the load.
With "Hidalgo," Touchstone whisks us back to that era when cowboys were synonymous with adventure and romance--not necessarily the female kind, but certainly the whiz-bang dime-novel variety.

Hidalgo is a fair-to-middlin' movie that could've been much better with three changes: more editing (133 minutes was sheer torture ), less incredulousness, and, let's face it, a more interesting topic.
Though his (I assume) skills were great fun to watch, the stuff the horse playing Hidalgo was made to do in character , made me roll my eyes with disbelief; especially near the end.
