A different perspective of war, and very much needed one. This story covers the lives affected by war. The male lead undergoes emotional strain while the female lead contrastingly grows strength from, or perhaps in spite of the war.The movie's... Full review

I don't understand why most people don't appreciate this movie. I guess one reason is that it's not easy to look at your own people, US soldiers, as enemies, or at your country - in the final - as the... Full review

Heaven & Earth is not a great film
Subtlety has never been Stone's strong suit but he keeps the sledgehammer in the shed for most of this beautifully filmed and emotionally affecting adaptation of Le Ly Hayslip's autobiographical novels When Heaven and Earth Changed Places and Child of War, Woman of Peace.

Technically, the film is also wonderful, with excellent cinematography and an elegant score.
Stone and cinematographer Robert Richardson capture the early moments of beauty in the country quite well, through shots of swaying, deep green grass and sunsets.

Heaven and Earth" is rated R for considerable violence and profanity, along with sex and nudity.
Hiep Thi Le's central performance is generally quite good, though her voice-over narration is preachy and unnecessary.

For all its emotional anguish, however, not to mention teeming movie extras, beautifully framed rice paddies and descending helicopters, it lacks a poetic center.
At 138 minutes, "Heaven and Earth" feels even longer, thanks to Stone's structurally clunky script, which is narratively hamstrung by two autobiographies by Le Ly Hayslip -- "When Heaven and Earth Changed Places" and "Child of War, Woman of Peace.

Heaven and Earth " is based on two books by Le Ly Hayslip, who is now a successful Vietnamese-American businesswoman in California.
This is the first time he has tried to place himself inside a woman's imagination, and that he succeeds so well is due partly, I think, to an extraordinary performance by Hiep Thi Le in the leading role.
