The translation of the play into a modern context works wonderfully and surprisingly well, and the director makes many interesting and compelling choices. For example, the use of Polaroid snapshots instead of flowers in Ophelia's mad scene provides a striking visual... Full review

Michael Almereyda's "Hamlet" has the novelty of taken place in modern times. Shakespearean English remains almost intact but that's all that is left from the play. Although familiarity with the setting was meant to draw the viewers closer to the... Full review

For a modern day version of a movie, this film nails shakespeare's story and has more symbols then any other movie I have ever viewed. It is clear that the director Michael Almereyda had a clear understanding of the play and... Full review

I don't know why filmmakers find it necessary to remake a story over and over again. There must be a dozen versions of this story on film. Frankly, I'm really sick of them. There are a few that are excellent, but... Full review

That film left a bad taste in my mouth. Somehow, the editor of the script managed to butcher Shakespeare's image by slicing the script to death and ruining every single scene and destroying the character's motivations, including the lovely Ophelia's madness,... Full review

As such, the film unwittingly makes a case for slashing funds for the arts.
Dramatically, "Hamlet 2" is a twist on the formula of let's-put-on-a-show, with the twist being that no one wants the show, least of all the administration, which has chopped the school's art funds.

Again, several of Almereyda's innovations are risky, such as his odd staging of the play's most famous soliloquies (including setting Hamlet's "To be or not to be" speech in the middle of a chain video-store's action films section).
The suddenly paranoid Claudius sics several of Hamlet's friends on him, including childhood pals Guildenstern and Rosencrantz (Dechen Thurman and the always terrific Steve Zahn), as well as Ophelia's brother, Laertes (Liev Schreiber), who has ample reason for vengeance of his o ... Full Review
