This is an interesting military comedy about a G.I. (Jason Biggs) who is misassigned to Greenland instead of Hawaii. What is even worse, it that he is supposed to be a Public Information Officer, and the CO (Jeremy Northam) wants a... Full review

This highly amusing film, clearly inspired by Trumbo's Johnny Got His Gun, fails us only in its last few minutes of confusion. What is obvious is that the Army as in Iraq does not want the public to know how terrible... Full review

I just caught this film by chance on MovieCentral. I had never heard of it, so I had no expectations going into it and the only info I had on it was the obscure log line in MC's description of it.... Full review

One of the criticisms I've read and initially felt myself that this film tried too hard to be too many things. Was there comedy? Yeah. Mystery? Yup. Drama? A bit of that too. And when I finished watching it last night... Full review

The final verdict: this is just a bad B-movie masquerading around as socially biting commentary on the army.
The film's biggest problem, in my opinion, is that it's built completely on a foundation of ignorance of what the army is really like as well as a general disregard for logic and normal human behavior / reactions.

Guy X" succeeds in creating a languid, almost hypnotic portrait of go-nowhere, do-nothing peacetime military life.....As a story, "Guy X" is a bit of a mess.....Presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen (the format is completely mislabeled on the DVD cover, by the way), "Guy X" looks pretty solid, with the film's rich Greenland landscapes contrasting well with the intentionally drab interiors.....it'd surely get reworked with great anger and wild antiauthoritarian abandon.....The supporting cast is equally ... Brit director Metzstein deserves praise for his handling of the material.
Romp-comedy paragon Biggs lands in unusual territory with this damning portrait of military-press relations.
To this, Biggs lends a likeable human face.

The unusual locale is probably Guy X's main selling point as it is a soldier's saga which suffers from comparisons to MASH, Catch-22 or more recently Buffalo Soldiers.
Certainly the actors do their best: it's the situation we find them in that is never quite believable.

And while there's an enjoyable subversive atmosphere, the story simply isn't sharp enough to mean much of anything.
There's plenty of dry and funny material here, augmented by the 24-hour sunshine, the gently subversive nature of the soldiers and Rudy's role as the base newspaper editor.
