Unfortunately, ``Great Expectations'' is liable to have the opposite effect.
From watching this meandering, stilted movie, now out on video, anyone unfamiliar with Charles Dickens' novel would be not only disinclined to pick it up but also clueless as to why it's considered great.

Feb 1, 1998 -- "Great Expectations" is a movie based on the Dickens classic story that benefits from great acting and inventive camera work, but is ultimately dragged down by the slow and awkward way the plot unfolds.
While everyone is emoting away with great intensity, the screenplay seems to wander aimlessly with random acts of coincidence throwing people together time and again.

This is a mighty appealing philosophy and the filmmakers promote it admirably in this handsome, well-acted, well-written and beautifully directed movie.
It's the kind of scene that's been in 112 movies a year for the last 60 years and these filmmakers are too good to stoop to such hack work.
