A film full of great atmos, made with verve by actor/director Matthieu Kassovitz, Gothika is kept somehow watchable (in a style-before-substance sort of way) by its star cast delivering powerful performances. This is not to suggest that "Gothika" is entirely unlikable, the first half of the movie being quite effective, but it goes downhill fast from there. Clearly, the success of "The Ring" the year before inspired the "Gothika" filmmakers. ... Full Review

Performances Better Than Film Deserves Given the limitations of the script, Gothika is competently directed by Mathieu Kassovitz, though it never reaches the deliriously bonkers heights of his previous thriller, Crimson Rivers . At any rate, if the unseen hand of the publicity department is somehow involved in the fortuitous timing of that particular announcement, you can hardly blame them for trying, as Gothika pretty much needs all the help it can get, despite pretty decent performances from all concerne ...
