Both Taylor and Newton are marvelous in their roles, but the magic touch here is a special tone, a uniquely personal color, that only Duigan can contribute. This kind of emotional precision -- that is, this ability to make the subtlest psychological distinctions -- is a rare gift, and Duigan gets full mileage out of it, especially in the intimate scenes between these star-crossed teenage lovers. ... N ormally, the phrase "charming movie" has me reaching for my broad sword. The movie is full of wonderful scenes: Newton caught hiding in a boys' toilet stall as the unsuspecting lads come in to shower, a line of uniformed boys ritualistically facing a row of ballroom-gowned girls at a school dance, and so on. ...
