This remake of the 1960's Flight of the Phoenix is very unsatisfying. The character development is not as rich as the the James Stewart version. Dennis Quaid simply did not portray the depth of emotion that James Stewart did in... Read more at imdb.com
If you are planning to see this movie, don't bother. It's a poor remake of a very good old movie. As a pilot, and from a pilot's point of view, the crash scene was completely unbelievable. If you aren't a... Read more at imdb.com
Here's just a few things that make no sense...1. They fly out of a mine site in Mongolia (Gobi desert - frozen high altitude wastelands). But they crash in a hot sandy desert that looks pretty much like the Sahara... Read more at imdb.com
Almost 40 years after the original the 2005 version shows how much the world has changed. To start off with there is a woman passenger in this film unlike the original where the only female was an exotic Arabian dancer... Read more at imdb.com
An instantly forgettable - a film that rewards no one with renewed viewings. I got the impression no one cared about this film - certainly not the actors and all the tech stuff was thrown away . So how do... Read more at imdb.com
I'm not saying that I didn't get caught up in this a bit, but then I searched my memory for the original, which cam out when I was pretty young. It starred Jimmy Stewart, who was a good deal more... Read more at imdb.com
Do not waste your money. This remake is extremely flawed, and my child could have done a better editing job. For the first 10 minutes, I thought it was fantastic. But, once the plane wrecked and came to a complete... Read more at imdb.com
I've not seen the original, before you ask, but I do know of it, and quite frankly I'm sick fed up of remakes. Yet there was something that attracted me to this story, the cast was one. A nice multi-national... Read more at imdb.com
"Flight of the Phoenix" is at best a so-so remake of the fine Robert Aldrich adventure classic from1965. The plot in both films is fairly simple and straightforward. After a plane crash lands in the Gobi Desert, the survivors hit... Read more at imdb.com
In the original movie Hardy Kruger commented to Jimmy Stewart something to the effect that "the only thing outstanding about you is your stupidity". Interestingly enough in the remake, stupidity seems be the only thing that "outstanding".I have been on... Read more at imdb.com

Ultimately, Flight of the Phoenix is like one of those silly movies where the good guys are in a submarine facing enemy fire, the engines are shot, and the mechanic just died.
However, the plot draws attention away from the cardboard dialogue and personalities of these characters pretty well.

Combustible Celluloid
A remake of a 1965 Jimmy Stewart movie in which the survivors of a desert plane crash build a new makeshift aircraft from the wreckage of the old one, Flight of the Phoenix has no surprises at all.
fails to establish the terrain (aerial shots show a vast field of dunes, yet some scenes take place in rocky valleys) and has his characters inexplicably spend their down time outside in the blazing sun.

I think theres a good psychological drama possible from this material, but Phoenix almost totally ignores that side of things.
Granted, I suspect a lot of the films problems stem from the script.

Ribisi, who has suffered career woes of his own, has seldom been better.
But as genre flicks go, it's well crafted and capably acted.
And he's also good at zooming over the story's shakier terrain.

Review by Louise Keller: A boys own adventure that relies on its exotic setting rather than credible storyline, Flight of the Phoenix fails to take flight due to a mindless script and uninspiring direction.
Teenage boys may enjoy this adventure on some level, but for the rest of us, it is more interesting to read about the origins of the Phoenix, a mythical bird that lives forever.

Annoyingly, Ribisi delivers a cheap parody of Hardy Krger's original portrayal, affecting Nazi undertones even down to the platinum blond crop and wire-rimmed spectacles. Thankfully, the other players take a more subtle approach and Otto is especially good, introducing a... ... Full Article
