Throw in a sad sack author (Richard E. Grant) who's lost his sight to ensure we get some spoken word into the frame
Despite a confusing metaphysical stance, and a rather pretentious denouement, the movie feels more like a complex justification of Madge's whole career than a stand-alone feature.

Filth and Wisdom" began as a short.
It's rather sweet to think of "Filth and Wisdom" as Madonna's reconnection to her own boho Manhattan striver self a generation ago, and I did enjoy the last five minutes or so, when the movie essentially stopped and Hutz's band, Gogol Bordello, took over.

A case could be made for both, though the latter is an awfully tempting summarization of "Filth and Wisdom.
After all the damage Madonna has inflicted on the world with her acting, it's amazing anyone would allow her the chance to actually direct a motion picture.

Hutz isn't much of an actor, but he's charismatic, leaving the few bright spots of the picture to him and his bathtub-housed lecturing.

The characters in this short movie are so sketchy, it's left to a blind ex-poet who lives downstairs (unconvincingly played by Richard E. Grant) to provide the aforementioned wisdom.
It's debatable whether Madonna is an artist, but she's certainly been a provocateur.

Alison Halfway through Filth and Wisdom I realized the movie it most reminded me of was Fame , so I started pretending that it was actually made in 1983, and it was almost an enjoyable film, in an idealistic, wannabe-gritty way.
It's a shame that he's the most charismatic person in the movie and yet his character has the least amount of curve.

Well, the castmembers are appealing and decent actors, even given the prosaic material.
As well, Gogol Bordello are quite an entertaining band, and you may be tempted to download them off iTunes.
