While the cast is marvellous
Koltai's direction in the film's final reel, however, is disappointing.
Toni Collette's Nina is a pitiful and rather unlikeable character

PM Name : Tracey Comment : This was the most boring movie of all time.
I left after 20 minutes (I thought the strong cast heralded a good film).
I found the film a little long but very engaging and well acted.
Redgrave, was was .terrific.

The massive cast does the best it can with the intermittently maudlin soap opera histrionics, and much of the film is blandly appealing....The Specs The anamorphic widescreen (2.40:1) transfer is really quite excellent, especially in the more picturesque "flashback" sequences.....they go food shopping, which just goes to show what a bunch of great actors can do for a fairly conventional tear-jerker..... ... Overall, Evening is just okay, and fails to be as good as it could have been.
There is such a unique range of talent that makes Evening fun and entertaining to watch, even though the film itself is longer than necessary and a bit slow.

They arent as long as the movie but are just as dull and predictable.

It is a sad story that lacks emotion.

The Bad Unfortunately, the film fails to engage on an emotional level, despite the best efforts of its talented cast.

Toni Collette and Natasha Richardson appear in a subplot involving the happiness or otherwise of Ann's daughters, and this is another area in which Evening doesn't quite succeed.
There is a suggestion of an interesting film underneath all of this, and certainly a cast featuring Redgrave, Collette, Danes, Glenn Close and Meryl Streep would usually fill one with hope, but Evening never quite manages to overcome its own sense of worthiness.

Susan Minot's novel Evening is a complex exploration of the fragmented and disordered memories of a dying woman, focusing on the weekend of her friend's wedding and the tragic events that occurred.
Constantly and sloppily transitioning between the past and the present, Evening is never able to take a full grasp on what parts of the story it is trying to tell, and what message it is trying to convey through that story.

no matter how hard Evening tries to hide it with glossy cinematography and a star studded cast, one fact remains, nothing can salvage bad filmmaking.....All parties involved deliver great, if sometimes over-the-top, performances.....It is hard to stress just how utterly terrible Evening is.....Never has so much collective talent acted in such an underwhelming movie. The blame cannot be placed on the actresses..... ...
