An Acting Tour de Force
Nov 07, 2008

This is a little gem of a film with superior acting and breathtaking visuals. It does not appeal to a wide audience and never got wide distribution. I'm not even sure it was ever shown commercially in the United States. It... Full review

With the all of the big names in this film I was expecting a real experience. I could not have been more wrong. I wanted to take the DVD out after 10 minutes but my 18 year old son said we... Full review

...because it was too disjointed and it seemed it was building up some steam and then suddenly it stopped again or more exactly dragged to a stop. Not a lot happened and what did happen had limited explanations explanations. What were... Full review
A disappointing film that wasted all its potentials

This film is about three Nazi death camp survivors reuniting 35 years later, arousing deep emotions and provoking old wounds. I had high hopes for "Emotional Arithmetic". The cast is completely stellar and Oscar worthy. Their performances are all excellent, but... Full review

AUTUMN HEARTS: A NEW BEGINNING is another one of those independent films that lacks an audience until the DVD is released. Granted it is not based on subject matter that titillates the big movie house throngs, but it is a warmly... Full review

What an amazing cast this film has, an amazing cast, an amazing story, a beautiful setting and wonderful performances by every one of the actors (even the young boy). I am shocked that these actors in this good of a film... Full review

I watched this film last night and its been with me on and off all day. First off, don't expect Entertainment in the purest form of the word here, this is a very adult, cerebral and slow-burning experience. Ultimately, its about... Full review

It is fascinating how the horrors of World War II continue to spark off good, intelligent cinema around the world even after a gap of over half a century. "Emotional Arithmetic" based on a novel by Matt Cohen (a Jew?), begins... Full review

One of the other more minor problems with "Autumn Hearts" is the lack of logical progression for any of the characters.....Fine actors all and each of them let down by the source material.....s hard not to at least mildly recommend the film (also known as "Emotional Arithmetic") on the basis of the performances.....s perhaps the most damning aspect of "Autumn Hearts....This may also be a symptom of poor editing..... ... We come back to the opening sequence later in the movie, when we understand why everyone seems so unhappy. What it's really about are the performances, mostly by Plummer and von Sydow, the impatient older husband and the compassionate old poet, who give the film an edge and a heart, respectively, out of proportion to its narrative. ... Their marriage seems warm but rickety, partly because she is somewhat unstable -- people keep urging her to take her pills -- and partly because he is a world-class grump, a difficult, abrasive man ("There's nothing I hate more than good intentions") brought to angry life in a wonderful performance by Plummer. ... The charm of Paolo Barzman's second film rests considerably in the hands of the capable actors--Susan Sarandon, Max von Sydow, Christopher Plummer and Gabriel Byrne--all who have a maturity to carry off their parts in the film with grace. As I watched the film I could not help but note the growing interest filmmakers in family bonds-in Emotional Arithmetic it is merely a subplot balancing a "virtual" family that suffered during the Nazi rule with that of a real family comprising three generations living in ... Watching their individual transitions into professional, polite actors is far more interesting than what was likely intended. The film follows Melanie (Susan Sarandon) - a survivor of the Drancy "transit camp" where Jews were detained by the Vichy government prior to being shipped off to Auschwitz - in her modern medicated married life to a somewhat embittered professor (Christopher Plummer). ... The cast is impressive, the subject is immense, and the film does justice to neither. Very loosely (baggily) based on the Matt Cohen novel, Emotional Arithmetic adds up to much less than the sum of its many parts. ... Full Article
