There's no doubt that Cameron Crowe's heart is in the right place, but Elizabethtown probably works better as a tribute to his late father (to whom the film is dedicated) than the uplifting romantic comedy to which he aspires.
Kirsten Dunst is the film's bright shining star, and the best scenes are those when her effervescent Claire establishes a relationship with Orlando Bloom's lackluster Drew.

Crowe, my favorite writer and director, has had a constant streak for making films that continue to make me feel inspired and alive.

The movie isn't great
Arriving at Elizabethtown, Drew goes around offering everybody his condolences until he is told that they are usually incoming when you have lost your dad.
Crowe also has a great ear for music.

Elizabethtown aspires to a sort of freshness, working hard to produce peculiar rhythms and offbeat comedy, but its repeatedly flattened by its dull boy heros predictable route to redemption.

What makes "Elizabethtown" special is the character arcs that populate the narrative.....Because the characters that populate the family (and close-knit community of Elizabethtown) are so warm, round, and human, Drew is forced to reevaluate the perceptions he had of his relatives..... ... The film does open so well and so funny.
The film opens brilliantly with the semi-comic crisis at the shoe factory, and doesn't quite recapture that opening mood in the later stages.
Alec Baldwin is hilarious.

On its own merit Crowe's saccharine screenplay and dysfunctional direction doom Elizabethtown as one of the year's biggest disappointments.
Crowe gathers an eclectic mix of Southern eccentrics to the Elizabethtown family household, adding homespun goodness and one-liners that will appeal to Wal-Mart shoppers.
