Louise Keller "Its a stunning, magnificently mounted film of sheer cinematic depth and character, with both a sense of finely drawn history, coupled with a contemporary edge.
This is Blanchett at her best, responding to Kapurs lucid and firm direction, as he raises the film well above standard costumer levels to an intricate, intelligent human and historical drama.

Royal intrigue is inherently dramatic but "Elizabeth" is pretty sedate stuff, despite multiple murders and sexual shenanigans.
Blanchett ("Oscar and Lucinda"), though, whose Elizabeth is the only fully-realized character in the film, is wonderful as a young woman who must shed her lover (Joseph Fiennes) and her naivete in a bid to hold on to her throne.
