very entertaining - nice story line and Ed Norton does a great job in this one - his acting is so real and he gives off such a pure innocent feel... Full review

This is a fascinating story from the perspective of a mentally disturbed person. It doesnt attempt to justify their actions, just explore things from their perspective. Great acting and even better script. I cant believe the critics slam this film for... Full review

I hadn't heard of this movie or even seen previews. It was late and this movie was on hbo or showtime or something and maybe 15-20 mins in. So, I thought it was okay but towards the end for 1 it... Full review

This could've been good, but it wasn't. The story just wasn't executed correctly, and it's an on and on picture.... Full review

The story and the acting are excellent. In the film, Edward Norton's performance is not as notorious as in other films but is deeper. I think that is brilliant. This film is about solitude and holding to someone as a way... Full review

I'm really tired of these types of movies. Just because you make a movie on the darker side of humanity does not make you deep or creative or a great artist. The writers/directors of this movie failed miserably in making characters... Full review

Edward Norton's Harlan is a deeply troubled yet forgiveable character that is well played and intensely intersting. Norton is truly one of this generation's most gifted actors. The performances are strong throughout, including David Morse as Wade, the lonely father trying... Full review

Acting is good, story is bad. I wish the characters in these films would stay consistent at least. It's one of those movies you're uncomfortable watching and wished you hadn't started watching. Not that a tragedy can't be a good film,... Full review
Western Genre Flop

Looked like a good drama for about the first half and then it takes a horrendous turn for the worse, too bad. This movie took a lot of western genre characteristics and themes but ultimately it failed in trying to make... Full review
Please, don't expose the American stupidity

I guess the producers consider it useful to show how this people are just to set an example and to say "Please, don't be like them". If is this the case, then I would change my opinion and my rating. This... Full review

In the case of Down in the Valley , I was lucky; I ended up with an incredible cast that pleased both the financiers and me. So when I got to Down in the Valley , and I was suddenly being asked to cast from known, bankable talent in order to finance the film; it was very different. ... Full Review

His work in "The Illusionist," made at about the same time as "Down in the Valley," is another good example. There is always something a little unsettling about Norton's movie characters, something hidden behind the disarming smile and the modest, boy-next-door charm. ... Full Review

Over the past ten years or so Edward Norton has become one of my favorite actors.....So it is with 2005's "Down in the Valley," a somewhat jumbled, postmodern, suburban Western, which he pretty much carries despite the film's shortcomings.....place the blame for society's woes on the way our movies, television shows, songs.... ... MDT Edward Norton has already cemented his reputation as one of the best, most reliable actors currently working in film today.....With a few exceptions, his performances have been stellar even when the films haven't been nearly as good.....But Norton has to take at least some of the blame for "Down in the Valley," a ludicrous, would-be Western hybrid.... ...
