but I liked this film. It represents one of the more creative phases of filmmaking that has come and gone. I suppose making what it did does not make a case for repeated efforts in the same genre. I think it... Full review
The Best Jarmusch Movie
Mar 15, 2006
lovesphilip - yahoo.com
Of all the Jarmusch movies I've seen (as of March 2006), this was by far the best. The 3 principal characters and their tale were made for black and white and for Tom Waits's music. Unlike Stranger Than Paradise, this film... Full review

I first saw Down By Law when it first came out, and loved it. I watched it again recently, and it really hasn't aged at all. In fact, it has gotten even better. I'm not sure there's another movie like it... Full review

The_Void - imdb.com
While his later and more acclaimed works such 'Night on Earth' and 'Dead Man' may well be better films, this is the one that catapulted Jim Jarmusch to the forefront of obscure American cinema in the 1980's, and aside from that... Full review

FilmOtaku - imdb.com
One thing that I have always liked about Jim Jarmusch is that a lot of times he seems to use people whom you've either never heard of, or wouldn't expect to see acting in a film. His 1986 film "Down by... Full review

This movie was a total surprise to me. I'm sure it's very famous, but somehow had never seen it before. From the beginning scenes, I was expecting a gritty low life, wind up in the gutter, down and out kind of... Full review

If you're in for an alternative and quality film, that's for you. If you only like standard happy ending Holly-style movies, that's not for you... so don't even bother watching it or posting a review. Explosive Roberto Benigni, cool Tom Waits... Full review

The film is heartbreakingly funny. Jarmusch shows how much he loves classic American films in Down by Law. Of special note are a few scenes that Lurie called the best acting he'd done at the time but that didn't make it into the film. ... Full Review

Somehow or other, he winds up in the arms of gorgeous Italian girl Nicoletta Braschi -- and is even able to provide new clothes and escape routes for his astonished comrades! Tired and hungry, they separate to search for food: Waits goes one way, Lurie another, and the frightened Benigni decides to risk stepping into a ramshackle diner. ... Full Review

Movie Reviews UK
The former is packed with satisfying dialogue, making it very easy to watch and enjoy Down By Law , while the latter reveals the rewards of relaxing and letting the camera take its time. Waits and Lurie are equally excellent, both lethargic slacker types but from a radically different mould. ... Full Review
