It's just unfortunate that you're left wanting to see their film instead, such is the extent of Double Whammy's misfire.
Steve Buscemi makes the most of his limited role as Leary's partner, and DiCillo indulges his disgust at the Hollywood machine by incorporating two desperate screenwriters who spend the movie cooking up a clichéd actioner.

- Double Whammy has the irony of being even worse because it is clear that everyone in the cast and crew thinks they are really making a great movie!

Buscemi and Leary make an interesting team, Chris Noth is smart and slimy as the detective who deserves to be heard, Guzman is sympathetic as a fool for familial love, and Hurley and Leary throw off some genuine sparks as a couple.
Unfortunately, while colorful and somewhat entertaining, the movie is not the sum of its parts.
