So are erstwhile 'Swingers' Vaughn and Favreau, having co-written a film (with Dana 'What Happens In Vegas' Fox) whose wacky moments share equal screen time with some painfully sincere relationship melodrama.....Alas, all this achieves is to make an already choppy film feel even more dislocated..... ... is about right when it comes to dull island comedy....you have a pretty disappointing comedy.....Throw in some insipid drama from four couples who believe they would be having a better time at the single's resort across the lagoon....Couples Retreat" may make viewers wonder who the people behind this movie were mad at..... ... The film is a pathetic attempt at escapism....John Michael Higgins, in particular, shines amongst a dull cast as a counselor with a particularly vivid personality.....Despite the offensively trite humor, audience members in my theater seemed to be having a great time.....Perhaps, for some, the film taken at face value offers a vapid delight.....to celebrate, all of your favorite actors and actresses are looking for work..... ... Couples Retreat' fails to live up to its potential....the story favors contrived humor and implausible happenings.....In a lame snorkeling scene, Dave floats in a cloud of his own blood, the preposterous result of a miniscule shark fin grazing..... ... Full Review

Couples Retreat' lacks depth....betrays the film's utter lack of character depth.....To say that the film is completely devoid of humor would be a misnomer, however.....while his wife showers-jokes that are just too tired and worn out to carry the burden of the plot..... ... Full Review

The film then pretends that all this was part of the therapy....Jason Bateman is always a welcome addition to any cast....especially the awkward yoga scene with an overly enthusiastic instructor.....The characters soon start realising truths about themselves....It becomes a repulsive display of a cinematic closure, one made more offensive by the sudden appearance of Shane 's ( Faizon Love ) ex-wife..... ...
