Copland is a well made film with excellent entertainment value that dishes up the goods with panache and style.
James Mangold's literate, intelligent drama about police corruption across the river from New York, is a film that is involving, intricate and compelling.

I didn't remember it being this good a film the first time around.....The funny thing about "Cop Land" is....Admittedly, the best part of the film is the performances, but the plot and pacing work, too..... ... Full Review

No, but the movie works fairly well overall, and Stallone acquits himself reasonably nicely.
I think Cop Land at least merits a rental, for the movie works well enough to earn a viewing.
The movie would work better without such forced symbolism.

would have distracted from a weaker film.....All of the participants are great here, sharing stories from the set and discussing where Cop Land fits into their careers.....the flawed characters they've played, it's huge.....A scene that he shares with Keitel in a convenience store bristles with tension;....Stallone transformed his obscenely fit body into a formless blob for the film (which is what got all the press at the time) but he creates this character from the inside..... ... Happily, the film works quite well, and Stallone is terrific in the lead.
Much has been made of Sylvester Stallone's attempt to eschew his macho hero persona and return to serious acting with the police drama "Cop Land" - he took no money up front, he put on 30 pounds for the role, he's on screen with the likes of Robert De Niro and Harvey Keitel But in the end, none of that really matters.

The germ of a good movie rests somewhere in this turgid thing, and evidently someone other than Mangold would be required to make that apparent.
Stallone, who put on 40 pounds to properly inhabit the role - and prove that he could do without the burnished image, has reported that he's already received offers to play roles outside of his usual heroic range, and based on his performance in "Cop Land," he deserves the attention.

PETTY MOTIVES ``Cop Land'' tells one of those involved tales of corruption that somehow only make perfect sense in a New York setting.
Moriarty is vivid in a relatively small role as Keitel's wife.

De Niro, terse and funny, makes Moe an arresting contradiction -....Dense, meandering, ambitious yet jarringly pulpy, this tale of big-city corruption in small-town America has competence without mood or power -....Stallone gives a modest, likable performance in Cop Land .....As Ray, Keitel plays expertly in his wired-into-hostility mode....Stallone does a solid, occasionally winning job of going through the motions of shedding his stardom.... ... If Cop Land succeeds, however, this could be the shape of things to come.....the intense tete-a-tete between Mean Streets veterans De Niro and Keitel (''That's probably a big scene that everybody's gonna be looking for,'' says Rapaport);....As the ugly truth comes to light, Liotta (as a loner cop), Sciorra.... ... Christian Spotlight on the Movie
Ben Stroud, age 36 Cop Land was pretty good.
candace holtsbery, age 30s I thought that "Cop Land" was a very good movie, and was surprised when I saw it; it wasn't the seventies action knockoff I thought it would be, but an entertaining drama with an interesting plot.
