Speaking as someone 'who was there' - ie a teenage/young man in the late 1970's/early 1980's - the first thing that struck me about this film was the way in which it captured the atmosphere of that age. Dank, grim... Full review

I felt so bad for Ian. He wanted to marry his love, but little did he know- he was in for the biggest mistake of his life. (I could tell when the camera dropped down in the most unflattering angles possible... Full review

If I can add something to these reviews, it's that as a musician, this is one of the best movies ever that shows a rock band in performance situations. No bad lip-synching, no ridiculous looking drum miming. They're real performances by... Full review

To try and get a better sense of what this movie is about, try and read the book "Touching from a distance" by Deborah Curtis, Ian's wife. This movie is coming from her point of view of the events which can... Full review

Joy Division was a very influential 80's rock group from the UK & this is the story of its lead singer, Ian Curtis, a bright, talented singer/writer who could electrify an audience. It is hard to imagine this could be recreated... Full review

As someone who read Curtis' biography on her late husband, Ian, the film did an astoundingly good job mirroring the book. Curtis made his inner demons public, changed the face of the post-punk era and gave birth to a new genre... Full review

Control, however, is a much more personal film, directed by famed photographer Anton Corbjin, who had specialised in rock bands and had in fact moved from his native Holland to England to be closer to where the music came from.
Morton is outstanding and her body language in the final scenes will break your heart.

Sam Riley, whose acting career before Control was somewhat limited, portrays Curtis.

And she wasnt even half as good as Morton in Control .
That delicate balance between the music and the drama will undoubtedly be wrongly categorized as typical music video posturing by critics who are unfamiliar with the bands sound aesthetic, and also because of Corbijns involvement and his day job as a still photographer for musicians and other high-profile clients (he, in fact, shot a cover for one of Joy Divisions singles and had actually met Curtis).

Incarnating his beauty and distress, actor Sam Riley brings a kind of slouchy resolve.
The girls in the film are predictably symbolic, embodiments of Curtis' conflicts.

Still, the DVD provides evidence of just how extraordinary an accomplishment a film Control is, more for what it didn't do than what it did.
Although it's become a biopic given to focus on society's impact on the man in terms of the trappings of fame, Control focuses exclusively on the man himself, in all his personal torment, character flaws, and poetry.
