Like the best of his films, Closer is an incisive character study with nuanced performances, sharp dialogue, and insightful dramatic turns. The film presents love as a messy, usually unsatisfying process whereby needy people exploit each other's insecurities, and where the meet-cute doesn't necessarily lead to a happily-ever-after. ... The excellent plot twists and turns and expertly explores themes of intimacy, infidelity and insecurity. Finally, the opening scene in which Dan and Alice see each other from opposite sides of the street, as they walk through rush hour London traffic (while The Blower's Daughter from Damien Rice plays in the background) is one of my favorite movie scenes of all times. ...
