I totally disagree with those who say the film is depressing. While I would not to trade places with any of these people (with the possible exception of the guy who inherited a bundle from his aunt -- heh!), I... Full review

CINEMANIA runs sometimes on the Trio channel so I've seen it a few times. Its characters are what I'd probably become if I had unlimited time and resources to go to the movies five times every day. I've already been... Full review

The most impressive thing is that these people are real. No CGI or Stan Winston animatronics, and Frank Oz doesn't have his hand up their back, they are real people of flesh and blood just like me and you! Scary,... Full review

This movie, IMHO, is highly successful in depicting life of 6 New York movie "buffs" and contrasting their detached perception of reality and the dynamic world around them. The director gets the viewer to approach these people at different levels,... Full review

A homage to the obsessive-compulsive essential New York normal schizophrenic in the form of a film buff. How better to characterize this great town than with portraits of it's neurotic citizens. We love New York and New York loves the... Full review

I've always considered myself an avid cinephile, but after viewing the entertainingly disturbing documentary Cinemania , I think I need to adjust that self-definition.
I wanted more from Cinemania , although I admit to finding it diverting in a sadly humorous way.

The politically correct one would make the movie an unbearable bore
The ending of a feel-good movie requires a happy ending for the protagonists, no matter what the larger picture, and in spite of the odds stacked against them, Jack, Bill, Roberta, Eric and Harvey seem perfectly contented in their isolated, cinecentric worlds.

It's likely that, given our film-saturated culture, many of the viewers of "Cinemania" will be fully capable of identifying with their plight.
You might think they'd come off as hopeless film geeks, and, indeed, that's the dominant impression.

Cinemania's" collective portrait is of marginal people who year by year cut themselves off from a real world they didn't relate well to and who found a solace in flickering images.
Bill Heidbreder appears to be the brightest and most articulate of the lot, someone who might have taught film in college or done some serious reviewing or become a film historian had he not gotten sidetracked by the process of watching.
