Really, women drag their husbands and boyfriends to films like writer-director Susannah Grant's emotionally bogus "Catch and Release" and I feel their pain. Two passes may be in order for "Catch and Release," a film that a talented veteran of romantic comedy would have had trouble pulling off, let alone a screenwriter (Grant wrote "Erin Brockovich") who has never directed a film before. ... If only director Grant had "sacrificed" the film's many extraneous moments, Catch and Release might've been a more wholly satisfying journey of the heart. This is, after all, a nice movie, and everyone (even Grady's brittle mother, played by Fiona Shaw ) really wants the best for each other, even if it may, ultimately, mean a bit of self-sacrifice all around. ... Combustible Celluloid
Gray's fiance dies on a fishing trip just before their wedding, though thankfully the movie doesn't show any of this. Unable to afford her deluxe new flat, she moves in with her beau's fishing buddies, the whiny, girly Dennis (Sam Jaeger), the happy-go-lucky Sam (Kevin Smith) and just visiting from Los Angeles, the pretty boy with an even odder name, Fritz (Timothy Olyphant). ... Erin Brockovich screenwriter Susannah Grant is making her directorial debut here, and its an auspicious one: this is a beautifully crafted film in all respects. Reeling Reviews
In the end, "Catch and Release" proves as temporarily satisfying as its titular sports metaphor - its OK while you're watching it, but you're left empty handed. Would only the film have been as well assembled as the game and likable cast that barely keep it afloat. ... Full Review

To borrow its fishing jargon, "Catch and Release" should be thrown back in the water.Preferably with a large rock tied around it so it doesn't resurface any time soon. ... Full Article

Catch and Release is confusing on so many levels. It's a romantic comedy, but it's also a drama about death and recovery. It co-stars Kevin Smith, aka Silent Bob, a hero of independent filmmakers everywhere, but is clearly a commercial... ... Full Article
