A different Micheal J.

This isn't your father's Michael J. Fox starring in Bright Lights, Big City, rather a coke head who's having trouble adjusting to life in the big city that can eat you alive, namely Manhattan. He's surrounded by major partier and... Full review

Great representation of the 80's

This movie is a great representation of the 80's. If you like that era, you must see it! It uniquely captures the features and the downsides of a party-life pushed to the limits.... Full review

The "comma baby" was a part of the movie I have never forgotten since I saw it for the 1st time in 1988. The soundtrack was outstanding with the likes of Peter Gabriel & Brian Ferry. Michael J. Fox has a... Full review

This great film and novel adaptation is obviously underrated.Although I have not read the book, (and nor should I to be able to personally judge this film), my guess is that probably most people are whining that the book was... Full review

Michael J. Fox does an admirable job in the lead role of this movie adaptation of Jay McInerey's book. The plot concerns one man's downfall over the period of a week, and how it all stems from his mother dying... Full review
Actually Very Good

Despite the lukewarm reviews this film is always given, it is actually quite good. It may not fare on the same level as more gritty, powerful 80's substance abuse films such as Less Than Zero or Clean And Sober but... Full review

This is a good, although not great, movie that often gets a lower rating than it deserves. All the actors fill their roles perfectly, especially Keifer Sutherland. The problem is it occasionally tries to be funny (or something?), which doesn't... Full review

Fox is a talented actor of great range, "Bright Lights, Big City" should put them to rest once and for all.....But for the most part, screenwriter Jay McInerney (adapting his own novel) and director James Bridges ("The Paper Chase," "Urban Cowboy") have successfully made an anti-drug film without letting it sink into complete hopelessness.....Bright Lights, Big City" is loaded with wonderful character actors, many of whom lend a depth that helps the film enormously Wiest, Robards, Kurtz and Sternhagen in pa ... If nothing else it is certainly a solid, well-made film.....it does not succumb to the stylistic clichés of modern cinema.....Rather, Bright Lights, Big City wows by the antique practice of combining benign (although touched by the beautifying hand of Gordon Willis) visuals and a pleasant soundtrack with legitimately engaging narrative and on-point performances.....To conclude, Bright Lights, Big City is a good film that does not make the viewer feel especially positively inclined toward it.....One of the u ... Audio : Presented in a DD 2.0 surround mix, Bright Lights, Big City also sounds good, if not remarkable. His most decidedly risky move - the one that really raised eyebrows - was sullying his well scrubbed, polite-yet-smart-alecky persona by playing Jamie Conway, a coke and booze addled lost boy in Manhattan in Bright Lights, Big City (in all fairness, the role is largely sympathetic and somewhat of a variation, but it was still a calculated gambit in 1988). ... J ay McInerney has adapted his cult novel "Bright Lights, Big City," a fictional requiem for the drug-snorter set, with coke- cutting perfection. And director James Bridges (a last-minute replacement for Joyce Chopra) infuses this Manhattan drug-recovery tale with an appropriate rush of humor, pounding dance-club music and breakneck momentum. ...
