But A Streetcar Named Desire remains a classic film, largely because of Brando's iconic performance but also because of Malden's work opposite him, balancing him.....Brando's Stanley Kowalski was handsome but savage;....Malden's Mitch was plain-faced but gentle, a necessary contrast that makes the film (and the play before it) work so beautifully.....Malden won an Oscar for best supporting actor..... ... while the definition varies, few would quarrel with the jarring ferocity Brando brought to "Waterfront," "Streetcar" and "The Wild One" during the 1950s.....directors struggled to manage Brando the way Elia Kazan did during his breakthrough roles of the 1950s.....This ambivalence can be seen even in an early clip of Brando chatting with Edward R.
