Chandar Mohan has only one desire in his life - to get married. With this in mind, he comes to Bombay with his friend Gafoor, who runs a theatre. Being a gifted singer, Chandar is a hit on the stage and with one of the audience, Asha. Asha and Chandar's romance is blighted by her father, a retired Colonel, who does not want a civilian son-in- law. To further complicate matters, Chandar's star-crossed horoscope makes it impossible to find a compatible bride for him. Shankar, a small-time crook, discovers he is a look-alike of Col. Mangal Singh, and impersonating him, borrows huge amounts of money from Chandar's benefactor, Nisha. When he steals Chandar's chain and watch Chandar thinks it is Asha's father. Things come to a head in a hilarious chase at the end, before the bad guy (Shankar) is put away, and the lovers are reunited.
