No, it's not a great film. I think it's really well directed, this film. The song and dance numbers are exuberantly done MARGARET: You see, I enjoyed the songs but not the dances. ... Full Review

Maybe " Beyond the Sea " would work better as a Broadway play, or a cabaret show. The music is wonderful. It is already known that he is one of the best actors alive today. The lovely Kate Bosworth is great as Sandra Dee. ... Full Review

Unfortunately the rest of the film doesn't measure up to the same standard of excellence. The film co-stars Brenda Blethyn, Bob Hoskins, John Goodman, and Kate Bosworth as his famous movie star wife Sandra Dee. ... Full Review

This is a really long and boring movie that serves very little purpose other than to pay tribute to an idol. But Spacey seems to want to put Darin's whole song list into the movie, which by the fifth song starts to get tiresome. ... Full Review

As a character study and a narrative experiment, "Beyond the Sea" is water-logged, but the energy of its star and the breezy glide of the music keep it afloat. The glib-but-guarded Spacey, who does his own singing, seems tailor-made for this superficial milieu. ... Full Review

Still, Beyond the Sea was Spacey's baby and he goes with it, especially in some of the impressive production numbers. Yet much of Beyond the Sea is like Darin's cheerful songs, especially when Spacey and a bunch of dancers sing and hoof their way through the magical title tune, staged with old Hollywood-style flair. ... Beyond the Sea is never boring, but had Spacey taken the easy way out and hired a writer and a director with more experience in filmmaking, I think it could've been a much better movie. From this perspective, one could certainly argue that, without it, Beyond the Sea would shift from suffering from a lack of emotional resonance to being downright nonsensical. ... Full Review

The title "Beyond the Sea" comes from one of Darin's best-known songs, and the film encompasses nearly his entire life, detailing how he overcame a tough upbringing in the Bronx, as well as a serious childhood illness. Unfortunately, however, Spacey doesn't seem to be much of a filmmaker. ... Full Review
