Beckham's greatest strength, however, is its largely unknown cast, lead by newcomer Parminder K Nagra, who charms with her innocent face and puppy dog eyes.
Chadha, an Indian-born Londoner herself, has obviously put a lot of her experience - including her own charming family - into the film, as abundantly clear on her commentary with co-writer Paul Mayeda Berges.

The clash between immigrants and their acclimated offspring often drives big fat cross-cultural comedies, whether they be smart independent films like The Wedding Banquet or more mainstream efforts like Beckham.
Set in a middle-class suburb of London, the story centers on the travails of Jesminder "Jess" Bhamra (radiant Parminder K. Nagra), a teenager whose passion for football conflicts with her stern but loving parents' traditional values.

It's a warm fun movie with a good sense of humor.
An apt metaphor for the maneuver energetic teens of strict parents must do in order to score goals of their own.

While the film includes some standard issue contrivances and coincidences, it also puts them to good use, an investigation of the ways that expectations and assumptions shape experiences, particularly, girls experiences.
And so, they take to heart the advice offered by Jess best friend Tony (Ameet Chana): What your parents dont know wont hurt them.

Nobody can bend it like Beckham, she beams, referring to his extraordinary ability to warp space in order to get the ball to the goal.
But for Bend It Like Beckham writer-director Gurinder Chadha and her aunties (several of whom appear in the film as well), this feature is both clever and apt.
