Eh... the dog's pretty cool, but the typical cookie- cutter- neighborhood- American- family is annoying at best. The movie would have been a lot better if the dog had become rabid and killed everybody.... Full review
The Good & Bad Of 'Beethoven'

This was almost like an old-fashioned type of nice movie "the whole family will enjoy," as the stupid trailers used to always say. They aren't always right about that, but they are with this one.BAD NEWS - The "bad news"... Full review

Anyway, it's what little girls might read into "Beethoven" that's troubling. Of course, the children -- a shy teenage girl (Nicholle Tom), a skinny preadolescent boy (Christopher Castile) and their cute kid sister (Sarah Rose Karr) -- like Beethoven much better than they like Grodin. ... Chris, as Beethoven, is very good also. If you have seen this movie and would like to share your observations and insights with others to be posted here, please contact us ! The acting is deliberately hokey but competent all around. ... Full Review

Channel 4 Film
enjoy the acerbic asides which distinguish this offering from the glut of cute mongrel movies.....The plot thickens when a sadistic vet (Jones) plans and to steal the dog, Beethoven, for some terrible experimentation.....A sharp script (co-written by teen movie maestro John Hughes) and a cast of oddball characters (including an ingratiating yuppie played by David Duchovny) save the film from Disneyesque sentimentality..... ... Measure for measure, a furry good movie. Beethoven's great, moist nose begins to quiver and his large lungs can be seen to heave beneath his thick coat of fur. ... Full Review
