Adding to the layers of characterisation, Malick has written a wonderful narration for Holly.
Searing performances from both Sheen (who won the Best Actor Award at San Sebastian for his role) and Sissy Spacek (who was nominated as Best Promising Newcomer at the BAFTAs for hers), combined with superb cinematography, ensure a memorable film.

The innocuous way they hook up sets up this deceptively low-key road movie.
Terrence Malick's thriller Badlands (1973), is rightly revered as one of the most astonishing debuts in cinema.
Malick has never quite recaptured the cruel magic.

And now, 35 years later, "Badlands" is being revived for a one-time-only show in Manhattan on Saturday, April 26 -- and Spacek will be on hand to talk about what the movie meant for her, and to her long and wonderful career.
