Howard takes a pretty heavy-handed approach to the film's visuals. Unfortunately, Stephen's willingness to dive right into the inferno has estranged him from his wife, Helen (Rebecca De Mornay), and son, Sean (Beep Iams), who constantly worry he might not come home one day. ... Full Review

That lends the action scenes a sense of urgency and authenticity that even modern CGI can't duplicate, but unfortunately, the fire is the only thing about Backdraft that seems genuine. Established fans of the movie should be pleased with the treatment its gotten on HD DVD, but to those who haven't already caught Backdraft before, I'd suggest giving it a rental first. ... It's a good scene....rather than revealing where these eccentrically marginal daredevils really live, it uses them as the springboard for a run-of-the-mill conspiracy thriller.....With its mixed reverence for individualism and teamwork, the film could just as well have been about fighter pilots or football players.....it has a terrific look to it.....As Stephen, Kurt Russell pushes his squinty-eyed macho charm just a little bit over the edge..... ... Beyond that the film was really good. I dont think any of the flame sequences in Backdraft have been outdone in any movie or TV show since. Even though the roster of actors is impressive, the real star of the movie is the fire. ... Full Review
