Classic Bollywood melodrama

A reviewer once said about Bollywood that "if it's a colour, use it" and Baabul is anything if not colourful. There are lots of what could be euphemistically described as vibrant colours on screen at any given time. The plot, such as it is, revolves around love found, love lost and love re-found. All clocking in at little under three hours, with the characters bursting into song at the slightest provocation. Some of the choreography for the song and dance sequences must have taken ages to put together. As usual in Indian films, kissing is...more

This film will work with the family audience, especially the middle class, and the small town audience, in a big way! Let's begin with the story. Balraj Kapoor (Amitabh Bachchan) is a rich businessman with a progressive and modern outlook towards life. Shobhna (Hema Malini) is his lovable and adorable wife (ditto like 'Baghban'). For Balraj, Avinash is more a buddy than a son. After seven years in the U.S., Avinash returns home, adding to his parents cup of joy. He meets Millie (Rani Mukerji), a painter, and is smitten by her. (No offence to Rani but she looks more...more

Tears for fears. Anyone… I am a sucker for sob stories and love to let the stream of emotions glide through the eyes. But while watching 'Babul' each time that urge welled up, the effect was diluted by the simplistic superficiality of the treatment meted out to a noble subject. The end result of Ravi Chopra's efforts to highlight widow remarriage is an exercise in blatant surrogate advertising (Audi, Taj Mahal tea, Nerolac Paints, Kotak Insurance etc etc) and tons of sermonizing. If it wouldn't have been for the caramel-popcorn-romance generated by Salman Khan, 'Babul' may well have been a disaster....more

Avinash then meets the pretty Millie (Rani Mukherjee) who is a painter. They fall in love and get married....more

Bole To: When in trouble/conflict, deliver some grand, emotional dialouges. STORY: Salman gives lesson in fastest way to patao girl and gets Rani Mukerjee to marry him. He then dies abruptly. His father Amitabh then gives lesson in 'How to be cool father-in-law', and gets Rani's childhood friend and lover John Abraham to read '101 delicate ways to patao a widow'. John by-hearts the book and marries Rani. REVIEW:  The unusual thing here is the film moves very slowly in places where it should move fast, and takes sudden random jumps at places where it should go a little slower and...more

I just returned home after watching Baabul, and I must say, the movie is simply superb. This isn’t an ordinary movie relying on one big moment or performance. The script is just terrific to begin with. The first part displays the bond between Avinash and Balraj (buddy-buddy). The second phase displays the bond between Avinash and Millie. The third phase displays the bond between Avinash, Millie, Balraj, and Shobhna. The death of Salman is also portrayed so convincingly. Post-interval, things start spicing up. The emotional breakdown of the Kapoor family is just so touching. Don’t be surprised to drop a...more

I was really excited about this movie and wanted to watch it today only; I just could not wait until tomorrow also. I was worrying for the past one week about how to get to the cinema and finally I could make it. And was it worth all the worrying; YAY it was!! One day Avinash meets the chashmish Millie and falls in love with her and the two get married and are blessed with a cute lil...more
