Making his feature film debut, writer/director Joby Harold does a pretty decent job producing a stylish film with an interesting premise.
Most of the time, filmmakers start at the bottom with a B-movie and work their way up, so it's impressive that Harold accomplished what so many newcomers are rarely able to do right out of the gates.

Of the supporting cast, Lena Olin gives a solid performance, while the usually brilliant Terrence Howard sleepwalks through his part.
Christopher McDonald, probably the only actor involved who realises just how bad Awake is, adds a comedic touch as drunk anaesthetist Dr Lupin.

AWAKE is, fundamentally, a smart who-dunnit, without anyone actually being murdered.
If you are in the mood for a movie which doesn't have a holiday theme, and you enjoy medical dramas, AWAKE may be the perfect choice for you.

AWAKE A medical thriller with a noggin full of novocaine, this shocker about a botched heart surgery evidently suffered brain surgery to match.
Harold's glum overplotting squashes the sick humor and the innate fear of hospitals that gives the premise what kick it has; not even Craig McKay's clever editing can defibrillate the preposterous ending.

Awake" is rated R for language, an intense disturbing situation, and brief drug use.
There are good scenes and clever bits of dialogue mixed in with lots of Screenwriting 101 blunders.
