In a different way though. While "Gangajal" was graphic, "Apaharan" is slick. It moves at a fast pace throughout and rarely breaks its rhythm. All the actors deliver impressive performances. But it's Nana Patekar who steals the show in this one.... Full review
A fantastic movie though not as good as Gangajal

First things first, Apaharan is a good movie but it is not Gangajal. Prakash Jha's masterpiece was better than his latest movie. Gangajal was Gangajal.Apaharan is, what you may say, the story of an ordinary person from Bihar. This film... Full review

A very tautly made film that is gripping for the most part. Excellent script with some very clever tongue-in-cheek humor adds to lighten the mood up in what is an otherwise desolate journey into the extremely sad state of affairs... Full review

Apaharan shows a Ajay lost and frustrated by a system that fails him at every stage. The darkening of vision is not surprising, for between GangaaJal (2003) and Apaharan , Jha himself contested the 2004 elections as an independent candidate from Bettiah in West Champaran, and theres nothing better than an Indian election to open even the seen-all eyes to the murk in our lives as we go about life muttering in Brownian bliss, Gods in heaven and alls fine with the world. ... And yet what really makes the film really tick, Apaharan's greatest strength, lies in its marvelous supporting cast. There is an attraction between Devgan and her, but it is never spoken about and the film lacks a point where Devgan has to seriously consider her as a factor at any decision making point. ... At best, Apaharan succeeds in making you aware of the spate of kidnappings in Bihar, though the politician-police nexus has been beaten to death in Bollywood and hence, not a novel experience anymore. The film also talks about the deteriorating law and order condition in the state and how, right from ministers to politicians to cops to the youth, a number of people are lured into the world of crime. ...
